OCTOBER 2026
Will this really be the start of the first chill? Time will tell. There's still a few weeks of herbs, tomatoes and peppers left in most gardens. If it gets too cold, pull them and let them ripen on the counter. Pumpkin Palooza's back downtown this month (Oct. 30). And if you want to chase golden hour vibes with less crowds, Tuckahoe or Martinak around sunset are hard to beat. The library's got their October calendar posted online, worth a look. And if you haven't tried a cottage baker off Facebook yet, you're missing out, nothing store-bought comes close.
Homecoming's this week if you didn't know already. Parade comes down Market Street Friday in the afternoon, followed by the Cruise-In Car Show. Fall foliage map says we're hitting near-peak color between now and next week, worth a slow drive to appreciate the changing season. With fewer mosquitoes to worry about, take a walk or a boat out on the wharf instead, that late afternoon calm water is worth it. Grab your mums from Clayton Farms, Orly Farms or other local farms this week. Look for ones with more tight buds than open blooms, they'll last weeks longer that way. Dunk the roots in water before you replant too.
Hunting season's picking up around the county, with deer and squirrel both open. If you're near a tree line or have land next to power lines, worth a reminder that a stray shot into a line can take down power and internet for the whole road, not just cause a fine. Grab your pumpkin this week, and look for a solid green stem, not a dried-out gray one, it'll hold up longer. If you’re looking for something to get you in a spooky mood, The Moor is available for free with ads on YouTube. Below recently landed on Netflix, and From is coming soon. Widow’s Bay is a must-watch on Apple TV, and Scuttler’s Cove by David Barnett is a great choice for curling up with.
Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, so expect trick-or-treating to run later than usual with no school night to rush home for. If you want to get in the spirit while working or exercising, @4KWorldWandering on YouTube has an Ontario Halloween walking tour, all crunching leaves and porch lights. Speaking of the kitchen, It's Always Autumn baked pumpkin donuts are worth the trouble this week. Get a silicone donut mold if you don't have one, and pipe the batter in with a ziplock bag, snip a small corner off, it's a lot less messy than trying to spoon it in. And if you're looking for a good transition movie that it's kid-friendly-ish, try Krampus (2015).
